From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1950: Seventy-five years ago: Finance bill passed

KARACHI: Enunciating the Pakistan Gov­e­rnment’s socio-economic policy Finance Min­ister Ghulam Mohammad announced in Parl­i­ament yesterday [March 29] that the Govern­-­ment wanted to remove large inequalities in income without affecting individual enterprise and personal freedom. The Finance Min-ister was defending the Government’s taxation policy during the final reading of the Finance Bill. The Bill was passed after a six-hour discussion spread over two days. Mr Ghu-lam Mohammad declared that the Gove-rn­ment wanted to bring about … a “change for the benefit of the downtrodden” … “without creating chaos and without loss of personal freedom”. Nineteen Opposition amendments seeking reduction in the rate of Estate Duty and a abolition of increased duty on some of the imports were voted out… . — Staff correspondent
