HYDERABAD: Workers slam IRO-2002, privatization: May Day observed across Sindh

HYDERABAD, May 1: The International Labour Day was commemorated in various cities and towns of Sindh on Monday. Scores of trade unions took out processions and resolved to emulate the martyrs of Chicago.

In Hyderabad, a joint procession was taken out by the Pakistan Workers’ Confederation, Muttahida Labour Federation and Pakistan Wapda Hydro-Electric Central Union.

The All-Pakistan Trade Unions Organisation also took out a rally from the Fateh Chowk to the press club.

The other trade unions which held rallies and functions are: Sindhi Mazdoor Tehrik, Sindh Rural Development Organisation, Labour Party of Pakistan, All Road Transport Workers Union, People’s Labour Bureau and Former SRTC Employees Action Committee.

The leaders criticised the privatisation policy of the government, IRO 2002 and the Presidential Ordinance 2000.

They demanded that minimum wages act should be implemented in letter and spirit and wages of workers should be increased commensurate with the increase in prices of essential consumer goods.

SUKKUR: Hundreds of workers under the auspicious of Pakistan Workers’ Federation took out a procession in the city.

The rally started from the Barrage colony and marching through the main roads, reached at the clock tower where it converted into a public gathering.

The leaders criticised policies of the government due to which unemployment and price hike were on the constant rise.

The speakers said that privatization of the power sector have proved failure in the world and termed the privatization of KESC as a failure.

They said that taking advantage of the presidential ordinance 2000 and industrial ordinance 2002, corrupt and incapable bureaucracy was exploiting workers.

SANGHAR: A seminar was organised by the National Workers’ Party.

Representatives of labour unions participated in the seminar.

They said that labourers were being exploited and they were being sacked from jobs in the name of downsising and nationalisation.

He said that though labour laws existed but were not implemented in letter and in spirit.

They said the capitalists still continue to exploit workers and the WTO and free trade policy would make the rich more richer and poor more poorer.

Representatives of Sanitary Workers Union and Rickshaw Drivers Union also spoke on the occasion.

KHAIRPUR: Around 20 labour unions took out a procession under the aegis of Muttahida Mazdoor Federation.

The rally started from Phool Bagh and after marching about three kilometres, reached Sachal auditorium where a seminar was held. Labour leaders highlighted problems faced by labourers in the district.

They demanded that the district government should construct a labour hall, formation of a committee for problems of labourers.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: The Labour Party of Pakistan, Municipal Employees Union, Raaza Mazdoor Porhiat Welfare Association took out processions in Moro and Naushahro Feroze.

Activists of Labour Party of Pakistan took out a rally.

In Moro, rallies were taken out by different organisations.

THATTA: The People’s Labour Bureau took out a procession in the city.

Activists carried party flags, banners and placards.

They started procession from the Edhi centre and after marching on through national highway halted in front of the press club.

MPA Sassui Palijo, former MNA Babu Ghulam Hussain Memon, former MPA Dr Wahid Soomro and Iqbal Shah said that the rulers through their anti-labour policies have made the lives of labourers miserable.

The Pakistan Fishermen Society organized a seminar at Thatta press club.

The seminar through a number of resolutions demanded stoppage of privatisation of industries, withdrawal of contract system on fishing sites, proper compensation to labourers, release of water downstream Kotri and withdrawal of construction of Kalabagh Dam and other controversial water projects.

NAWABSHAH: Activists of District Workers’ Federation and other unions took out a procession.

The rally started from the H.M. Khoja school and ended at the press club.

Participants, including employees of Hesco, NBP and All Pakistan Clerks Association were carrying banners and placards.

They were raising slogans against privatisation, IRO 2002 and anti-labour policies.

They said that anti-labour policies were being implemented in the world due to which labourers were suffering and their problems were increasing.

The participants demanded that the government should end privatisation and provide relief to them.

MIRPURKHAS: Different labour organisations took out processions from the railway station chowk.

Under banners of People’s Labour Bureau, railway workers union, Irrigation workers Union, PTCL union, Kiln Mazdoor Ittehad, PML-N labour wing and Pushcart Welfare Association marched on the main roads were demanding of government to implement labour laws and increase wages.

SHIKARPUR: The Labour Day was observed by the National Centre for Rehabilitation of Child Labour and Pakistan Baitul Mal.

Speakers emphasized the need of unity and joint struggle for achieving the rights.
