HYDERABAD: Filtered water supply to be doubled in two years: nazim
HYDERABAD, April 4: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil claimed that within two years, the quantity of filtered water supply in Hyderabad would be doubled to be enough till 2015.
Speaking at a function held in connection with the installation of standby generators at the big pumping stations in the district, he said Hyderabad was the only district in the country obtaining dual power connections for water supply and sewage disposal facilities.
Generators also have been installed at pumping stations as standby arrangements.
The district government, he said, had paid Rs2.5 million to Hesco for dual power supply lines to all the pumping stations from different feeders. This facility was neither available in Karachi nor in Islamabad, he said, adding that the district had taken the step to overcome power outages.
He said the old water pipeline from the filter plant to the city would be replaced at a cost of Rs450 million. By next month, he said, all the 41 union councils would be provided hydraulic vehicles to lift garbage.
Kanwar Naveed said that a new division had been set up in Wasa to exclusively supervise the sanitation system. He said it was a historic day for Hyderabad because all the major pumping stations were being equipped with generators.
The district nazim said generators had been installed at 19 pumping stations and added that under this project, 43 generators would be installed.
He said that over the years, 80 per cent of the underground sewerage lines had choked with silt. He, however, said that a new division had been established in Wasa to combat this situation. The division had been provided with machines clean the lines, he said.
The district Nazim said that to increase quantity of drinking water, three water reservoirs with a quantity of four mega gallon per day were being constructed. He also gave details of other water and sewerage projects.
DCO Hyderabad Mohammad Sharif Awan, Deputy Nazim Zafar Rajput, HDA Director-General Tahir Ahmed, HCC&I president Masood Pervez and other officials of the district government were present on the occasion.
