Benazir, Nawaz ‘seeking privileges’

LAHORE, May 13: PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Husain says the ‘Charter of Democracy’ being discussed by leaders of the PPP and the PML-N is nothing more than a ‘package of privileges’ the two former prime ministers want for themselves.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said both the former prime ministers wanted the privileges made available to former presidents and wanted the term-restrictive law waived so that they could qualify to become the chief executives again. “They don’t bother for national interests,” he added.

Answering a question, Shujaat said the party would complete its electoral process by Aug 14.

When his attention was drawn to President Musharraf’s statement that Chaudhry Shujaat would continue to head the party, the PML chief said the president had the right to express his opinion on all important matters.

To question, he said so far former prime minister Zafarullah Jamali had not said whether he would contest the election for the party president slot.

Answering a question, Shujaat said he was willing to hold talks with the PPP, the Jamaat-i-Islami or any other party in the larger national interest. Denying the impression that the PML could not contest the elections alone, he claimed his party could get a two-third majority in the elections if it set its house in order.
