KARACHI: Cemetary being neglected

KARACHI, July 19: Members of the Christian community have appealed for an urgent revamp of their largest cemetery, Gora Qabristan, in Karachi.

Some concerned community members said here on Wednesday that Gora Qabristan had once been registered as heritage site for its proper maintenance.

Many of these graves, beautifully developed, are still the hall mark of the cemetery, said Ms Marie D’Souza who was accompanying Peter Frederick, a young entrepreneur. However, encroachment had been resorted to at the site with absolute impunity, she pointed out.

“We can witness boys of the surrounding localities playing cricket and football here causing damage to the cemented graves,” Ms Florence, a teacher, said.

The indifference towards its up-keep has also resulted in the growth of unwanted grass and weeds, they said, adding that water-logging and salinity were the other problems posing a serious threat to the heritage site.—APP
