KHAIRPUR: Rain destroys cotton, vegetable crops

KHAIRPUR, Aug 6: Several districts of Sindh received heavy to moderate rain after an interval of four days. Reports gathered by Dawn correspondents said that the cotton crop, vegetable fields and date orchards had been hit badly.

In Khairpur, it started raining on Saturday evening and continued till the filing of this report on Sunday.

Several katcha houses in the city and its adjoining towns were collapsed.

Electricity transformers in different colonies including Abid colony went out of order.

The city was plunged into darkness as power remained off for more than 10 hours.

Date orchids were badly affected due to the rain.

The supply of vegetables and milk from villages remained suspended causing shortage of commodities and price hike.

The drainage and water supply system remained disturbed in many areas due to non-availability of electricity.

Trade activities also remained dull.

The supply of newspapers from Karachi and Hyderabad to Khairpur and Sukkur districts was also affected.

SANGHAR: The rain started in the Saturday morning and continued for about two hours.

Crops of cotton, onion, chilli and tomatoes have been damaged badly.

Low-lying fields which have no drainage have been destroyed completely.

Farmers told Dawn that the rainwater was standing in fields and they were trying to drain it out.

Worst-affected areas of the district are: Khadro, Sinjhoro, Jafar Leghari, Kurkali, Jhol, Jam Nawaz Ali, Toori Mori, Bakhoro, Lutko Mari, Chak-39, 23, 24, 30, Dhalyar, Bhit Bhaiti, Khahi and some dehs in Shahdadpur and Tando Adam talukas.

The sugarcane crop has improved due to rain.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Different parts of the district received rain on Sunday morning.

The sewerage network in almost all towns has collapsed.

Naushahro Feroze, Moro, New Jatoi, Darya Khan Mari, Padidan, Mithiani, Tharushah, Bhirya, Bhirya Road, Kandiaro, Halani, Mehrabpur and Kotri Kabir received rain which continued till the filing of the report.

The sewerage network in Moro failed and the water was standing in Shahi Bazar, Bandhi road, Dadu road and Gadhero road.

In Naushahro Feroze, National Highway, Allahwala chowk, Padidan road and Station road were under dirty water.

The rainwater mixed with gutter water accumulated on roads of Padidan, Kandiaro and Tharushah.

NAWABSHAH: Nawabshah and its surrounding areas received heavy rain on Sunday.

It rained heavily in Nawabshah city, Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed, Daur, Buchheri, Bandhi, Doulatpur and 60-miles.

The water accumulated on low-lying areas and the main roads.

The power supply remained discontinued in the city and surrounding area till the filing of this report.

MIRPURKHAS: The city received drizzle intermittently on Sunday, making roads slippery and affecting business.

The rainwater has been drained out from roads by sanitary staff of the TMA.

Cleanliness of the main sewerage drains continued.

DADU: Different parts of Jamshoro and Dadu districts including Kotri, Thano Bula Khan, Thano Ahmed Khan, Karchat, Mole, Sari, Sehwan, Bhan Syedabad, Johi, Tando Rahim, Mehar and Khairpur Nathan Shah received rain on Sunday.

Jamshoro DCO Dr Khawar Jamil declared a state of emergency in the district to handle situation in the aftermath of rain.
