HYDERABAD: ‘Very weak’ point found on Indus embankment

HYDERABAD, Aug 8: Jamshoro DCO Dr Khawar Jamil on Tuesday found a ‘very weak’ point on the Indus embankment, between Manjhand and Sann. The DCO addressed a letter to the secretary irrigation to construct an apron on the emergency basis at the point or direct officials of the irrigation department to strengthen the embankment.

The DCO along with Manjhand taluka nazim Syed Ali Raza and EDOs concerned visited several villages on two boats and brought 100 villagers to two relief camps set up at government boys and government girls high schools.

The Sindh government had issued special instructions to the DCO to shift marooned villagers to safer places.

He also inspected the flood protective bunds from Manjhand to Sann and identified two other vulnerable points which would not be able to withstand the Indus waters pressure.

He directed the officials of the irrigation department to carry out massive stone pitching at the places.

Several villages between Sann and Amri are exposed to floodwaters and the DCO directed the departments to shift villagers in case of any eventuality with the help of police.

WASA: The Water and Sanitation Agency said on Monday that the agency, under directives from the District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil, had drained out rainwater even from the areas which did not fell under its jurisdiction.
