NAWABSHAH: Indus in spate at Nawabshah

NAWABSHAH, Aug 18: The water level in the Indus river was steadily rising at the Mud point and about 400,000 cusecs water passed through the river at the point near SM bund some 45 kilometres from Nawabshah on Friday.

The executive engineer of the Dad irrigation division, Mr Rasheed Khoso, said that a team of Pakistan Army headed by Brig Asfandyar Ali was present in the district to assist the civil administration.

More than 10,000 cubic feet of stones were dumped on sensitive points of the river on Friday and 100,000 more would be dumped by Saturday, he said.

Executive District Officer (health), Dr Khaliq Mangnejo said that the district had released a special grant of Rs5 million to set up relief centres near the bund.

The centres were working round the clock with doctors and ample supplies of medicines.

DCO Ahmed Bux Khokhar and DPO Dr Ghulam Sarwar Jamali were also present on the occasion.

Our Naushahro Feroze correspondent adds: About 513,000 cusecs water was passing through the Indus river near Bakhri embankment Kandiaro on Friday.
