SANGHAR: Rain destroys crops over 230,000 acres

SANGHAR, Sept 16: A majority of farmers will not be able to sow wheat crop in the coming Rabi season if proper arrangements were not made to drain out rainwater from 45 dehs of Sinjhoro, Sanghar, Khipro, Jam Nawaz Ali, Shahdadpur and Tando Adam talukas.

According to revenue officials, crops over 230,000 acres have been destroyed in the district due to recent heavy rains.

It rained here when cotton was about to be picked and farmers incurred losses of millions of rupees in form of seed, fertilizers, pesticide and labour.

The farmers said that they had been left at the mercy of God and the president and the prime minister did not even bother to inquire about the damages.

They said that they were not able to drain out water from fields due to unavailability of pumping machines and diesel.

They said that cotton crop, the main cash crop of Kharif, had already been destroyed and sowing of kitchen crops of the Rabi season was in jeopardy.

They said that the fields had become marshy and tractors could not be operated.

Thousands of rain-affected families were still residing in schools, road sides and embankments of canals waiting for relief.

The worst sufferers are daily-wage earners as farming activities are at a standstill and farm workers have become jobless.
