HYDERABAD: PPP-PML(N) decision to end army role welcomed by STP

HYDERABAD, Oct 22: The Sindh Taraqi Passand Party has welcomed a decision taken at the meeting held between the PPP chairperson, Ms Benazir Bhutto, and the PML-N chief, Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, in London to completely eliminate the role of army in politics and not to enter into any deal with General Pervez Musharraf’s government.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, STP chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said that the elimination of the role of the army in politics was the need of the hour to restore true democracy in the country.

He hoped that the leaders of the two main parties of the country will give top priority to restoration of real democracy in the country and protect the interests of the people.

He also expressed the hope that the two leaders will not enter into any deal with the uniformed people.

He said there were contradictions in statements made by General Pervez Musharraf. On the one hand, he has admitted that army rule was not in the interest of the country and on the other he claims that he was not discarding his uniform in the interest of democracy.

Mr Magsi maintained that it was a historical fact that no army dictator had ever restored democracy in any county of the world.

He demanded that the army should go back to the barracks and handover power to the chief justice of the Supreme Court for holding free, fair and transparent elections in the country and handing over power to the elected representatives of the people.
