SUKKUR: Gastroenteritis kills one, affects 50 in Sukkur

SUKKUR, Dec 18: A 13-year-old boy lost his life to gastroenteritis and more than 50 others majority of them old men and minor children were admitted to hospitals in different localities of the city during last four days after drinking highly contaminated water supplied by town municipal administration.

Mohammad Imran died of gastroenteritis on Sunday while Salman, Zeeshan, Kamal Khan, Iqra, Bisma, Imran Ali, Ms Rani, Sher Khan and Mohammad Ali whose ages ranged between nine months and 16 years were admitted to civil hospital on Monday complaining of the disease.

Hospital sources claimed that most of the patients belonged to New Pind, Thermal Colony and Chohan Muhalla which had been receiving contaminated water for years leading to an outbreak of the disease from time to time.

The disease has so far claimed several precious lives of innocent children but they have to this day failed to jolt the authorities concerned into action.

A team of doctors with EDO of health visited affected localities and provided patients medical treatment free of cost. The patients complained that they had been receiving contaminated water for years and were suffering from various stomach ailments.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people including women and children of Chohan community staged a demonstration and observed a sit-in on the road near Thermal power station the other day to protest against supply of contaminated water.
