Mixed fortunes for Pakistanis: British Open Junior Squash

KARACHI, Jan 3: Pakistani youngsters experienced mixed fortunes on the second day of the British Open Junior Squash Championship on Wednesday that commenced at Sheffield, England this week.

Aamir Atlas, a world number 35 from Peshawar, led Pakistan charge in the Men's U-19 event when the 16-year old outplayed Theovon Aspern of South Africa 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 in only 19 minutes to storm into the second round. Farzan Rasheed was the other Pakistani to sail into the second round with a 9-0, 9-4, 6-9, 9-4 win over Egyptian Karim Aga.

Imran Khan and Faizan Khan went down fighting in the event while Farhan Mehboob and Khalid Khan failed to report, hence allowing walkovers to their opponents.

In Men's U-17 contest, Raza Yaqoob, Sohaib Hasan, Yasir Iqbal, Saqib Yousuf and Waqar Mehboob reached the second round after winning their matches while Mamoon Qayyum and Zeeshan Khan suffered defeats on the second day of the tournament.

Arbab Dilawar, Ovais Khan, Aurangzaib, Nousherwan and Danish Atlas Khan sailed into the second after winning their matches in the Men's U-15 event.

Those national players who were lost in the U-15 category included Noor Ali Khan, Mahad Javed and Safeerullah Khan.

The Men's U-13 competition saw Shah Jehan losing to Essex's Ritchie Fellows 9-1, 9-1, 9-1. Umar Balaj and Fareedullah were the other national players who went out of the event after failing to report.

Meanwhile, in Women's U-17 event, Pakistan's Maria Toor paved her way into the second round after crushing Elodie Mahieu of Belgium 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 in just 21 minutes while her compatriot Zoya Khalid suffered defeat at the hands of her Egyptian rival.

As many as 26 players are representing Pakistan in the mega event.
