Malaysians shine in U-14 tennis

ISLAMABAD, Feb 1: The first leg of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Asian Under-14 Junior Tennis Championship concluded at the clay courts of Islamabad Club on Thursday.

The second leg of the ITF-approved championship will commence on Friday.

On the concluding day of the first leg, Pakistan’s Hira Ashiq paired with Merzuki Asri of Malaysia to clinch the boys’ doubles title, beating the all-Malaysian duo of Mohamed Khan and Heshaam Deen 6-4, 7-5.

In the boys’ singles final, Augkyaw Naing of Myanmar trounced Sambath Orn of Cambodia 6-2, 6-3.

The girls’ singles title went to Chai A Boey of Malaysia who beat Vietnam’s Dae Huynh 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

Chai A Boey and Dae Huynh then played together to defeat the Sri Lankan duo of Yasodra Karuratne and Sherene Wijeysinghe, to lift the girls’ doubles crown.—APP
