HYDERABAD: Water committee wants Wapda dissolved

HYDERABAD, Feb 7: The Sindh Water Committee on Wednesday termed the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) ‘an enemy of the state’ and warned that if the authority was not dissolved, its Vision 2025 about the construction of dams and canals would break the country apart.

The committee meeting chaired by Awami Tehrik chief Rasool Bux Palijo rejected the construction of dams on the River Indus, distribution of water formula and ministerial committee's decisions about distribution of water and termed the dams as a conspiracy to undermine the solidarity of the federation.

The meeting called the 1991 water accord ‘bogus’ and said that it was thrust upon the province by force. An illegal government had put its sign on the accord even after Sindhis had rejected it at all levels, it said.

Similarly, the ministerial committee's decision of 1994, which had no legal, constitutional or moral foundation was also imposed on Sindhis by force, they meeting said.

It demanded appointment of a reputed international commission to compensate Sindh after investigating into what it called unending robberies on the share of Sindh's water during last 150 years especially after the creation of Pakistan.

The committee demanded publication of A. N. G. Abbasi’s report in full and observed that the Musharraf government was trying to deprive Sindhis of their just right over the Indus waters by insisting on the construction of dams and canals. It was tantamount to committing economic murder of Sindhis, the body remaeked.

The meeting alleged that all the federal institutions were working against the interests of Pakistan, the oppressed nations especially Sindh province and Sindhis.

The meeting appointed Nazeer Memon as the secretary of Sindh Water Committee and Vishnu Mal as his deputy. It also formed a standing committee comprising Nazeer Memon, Prof Mushtaq Mirani and Jami Chandio.

The meeting decided to hold meetings of the committee every month on regular basis and hold a seminar in March this year on the "Anti-Pakistan, anti-Sindh role of Wapda and vision 2025".
