KHAIRPUR: Jirga-holders produced in court

KHAIRPUR, Feb 12: The Gambat investigation police on Monday produced in the court of senior civil judge Sultan Ali Leghari Ms Farzana Shaikh and seven others accused of involvement in convening a jirga, which imposed punishments on a couple after declaring it karo-kari. The jirga held in Gul Mohammad Shaikh village on January 2 had declared Ms Farzana ‘kari’ who was already married and forced her into remarriage with another man Misri Shaikh.

The seven accused are; Gulzar Ali Shaikh, Qalandar Bux Shaikh, Atta Mohammad Shaikh, Shahnawaz Shaikh, Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh, Khadim Hussain Shaikh and Moulvi Ghulam Mustafa Panhwar.

The judge asked the accused whether they would like to cross-examine Ms Farzana's statement or would like an advocate to represent them. They replied that that they would like to be represented by an advocate.

The judge then postponed recording Ms Farzana's statement to Tuesday.

DEMO: Workers of People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) staged a demonstration in Pir Jo Goth on Monday against removal of party flags from Mohib Ali Chowk, Salar Mohalla and Kingri Chowk.

Led by local leaders Ghulam Hyder and Ikram Shah the protesters told journalists that the some party flags had been removed and some had been torn into pieces on Sunday night.

They demanded that the authorities should lodge an FIR against the provocative act.
