Law officer’s stand on CJP issue

FAISALABAD, March 29: A lawyer selected as the assistant district public prosecutor (ADPP) has refused to receive his appointment letter in protest against the rough treatment meted out to the ‘non-functional’ Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).

Rao Shafqat Iqbal had been selected as ADPP in January this year and his appointment letter was issued on Wednesday. Mr Iqbal did not receive his appointment letter and returned it to the Punjab prosecutor-general with his resignation on Thursday.

Talking to Dawn, he said, “How can I serve for the government where even the CJP is not safe?”

He condemned the manhandling of the CJP and vowed to join lawyers’ struggle for independence of judiciary.
