Wapda steal show in tennis, badminton

KARACHI, April 14: Pakistan No 1 Wajid Ali showed his class when he beat country’s No 2 Umer Zeeshan straight in all-Wapda clash to claim men’s singles crown in the games badminton event at PSB Coaching centre Friday night.

Wajid, who made unceremonious exit in semis of the last month national championship at Lahore, was home 21-17, 21-15.

Asma Butt gave Wapda another gold when she handed 21-16, 21-15 defeat to promising Sara Khan (Sindh) for the ladies singles title.

Later, the sisters’ pair – Asma/Uzma (Wapda) accounted for Farzana/Saima (Wapda) 21-18, 21-12 to grab ladies doubles title.

The men’s doubles gold was annexed by Punjab’s Rizwan/Kashif who got the better of Ahsan Qamar/Iftikhar (Sindh) 21-17, 21-16.

Wajia Ali (Wapda) bt Umer Zeeshan (Wapda) 21-17, 21-15.

(Losing semi-finalists Ahsan Qamar (Sindh) and Ali Mehdi (Sindh) got the bronze medals).

Ladies singles:

Asma Butt (Wapda) bt Sara Khan (Sindh) 21-16, 21-15.

(Losing semi-finalists Ayesha Akram (Pun) and Uzma Butt (Wapda) got the bronze medals).

Men’s doubles:

Rizwan Azam/Kashif (Pun) bt Ahsan Qamar/Iftikhar (Sindh) 21-17, 21-16.

(Losing semi-finalists Zeeshan/Zafar (Wapda) and Nabeel/Zuhaib (Rlys) got the bronze medals).

Ladies doubles:

Asma/Uzma (Wapda) bt Farzana/Saima (Wapda) 21-18, 21-12.

(Losing semi-finalists Sara Mohmand/Ayesha Akram (Pun) and Palwasha/Sara (Sindh) got the bronze medals).

TENNIS

Former national champion Mohammad Khaliq on Saturday cut country’s ace player Aqeel Khan to size when he notched up a three set hard fought victory to capture men’s singles title in the games tennis event at CDGK Sports Complex on Saturday.

Khaliq, a former Pakistan No 1 who is currently based in Kuwait, dropped a set on way to registering 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 victory over a dejected Aqeel who has just returned from Pacific Oceania after losing the Davis Cup relegation tie which has pushed the country to group three in 2008.

The two later combined together to gave Wapda men’s doubles gold beating Inam Gul/Mahmood Khan 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Mohammad Khaliq (Wapda) bt Aqeel Khan (Wapda) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.

Men’s doubles:

Mohammad Khaliq/Aqeel Khan (Wapda) bt Inam Gul/Mahmood Khan (PAF) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

CANOEING

Pakistan Navy canoeists made a clean sweep of the 15 gold medals up for grabs in the games canoeing event at National Sailing Centre Friday.

Results:

K-1 200M:

1-Tahir Shahzad (Navy); 2-Mia Javed (Rlys); 3-Ghulam Rasool (Sindh).

K-2 200M:

1-Munir Raghib/Nishat Ahmed (Navy); 2-Sarang Zaib/Sangeen (Sindh); 3-Zeeshan/Rizwan (Rlys).

K-4 200M:

1- Navy (Waseem, Munir, Haji Ejaz, Nishat); 2- Rlys (Tayyab, Shahbaz, Kamran, Shan Ahmed); 3-Balochistan (Shahjan, Akram, Farhanullah, Izatullah).

C-1 200M:

1-Nasir Iqbal (Navy); 2-Abid Khan (Sindh); 3-Tanveer (Rlys).

APP adds: Navy pugilists displayed their punching prowess by winning the National Games Boxing competition at Qambrani Boxing Stadium on Friday night.

Navy ended with four gold, two silvers and four bronze medals while Army finished runners-up with three golds, two silvers four bronze medals. Wapda were third with two golds as many silvers and three bronze medals. Sindh came fourth with two golds, one silver and four bronze medals.

Sindh's Asghar Ali Shah, who won the 60 KG gold won declared the best boxer of the competition.
