HYDERABAD: Benazir hurdle to grand alliance: MMA leader

HYDERABAD, April 15: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader Dr Sahibzada Abul Khair Mohammad Zubair said on Sunday that Benazir Bhutto was the greatest hurdle to the formation of a grand alliance.

Mr Zubair who is acting president of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan said at a meeting with the party’s executive committee and district office-bearers that the PPP-military alliance was going to become a reality.

He said that Gen Musharraf's attack on judiciary had backfired and the ensuing lawyers' struggle left the government jolted. The military rulers had become highly unpopular and people now wanted to get rid of them, he said. He expressed apprehensions that Gen Musharraf could postpone elections for a year to prolong his rule.

Mr Zubair said that the situation prevailing in Balochistan and tribal areas had put at stake the very existence of the country and alleged that the development funds of Karachi and Hyderabad were being siphoned off to London.

He said that some banned sectarian organisations had resumed spreading hatred after changing their names and the issue Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa was the brainchild of the government.
