Council supports action against chief justice

LARKANA, April 16: The district council in its session on Monday passed a resolution supporting Gen Musharraf’s reference against Chief Justice of Pakistan amidst boisterous opposition from the members of Awam Dost Panel and Sindh National Front.

Babu Serwar Siyal of Khushhal Pakistan Panel (KPP) tabled a resolution which supported Gen Musharraf’s action against Justice Iftikhar and said it was his constitutional right in the capacity of president.

He said that institutions and not the personalities were important for the country.

The resolution met a sharp reaction from Barkat Shaikh of ADP who stood up on his seat in indignation followed by other members of ADP and SNF who also stood up on their seats in protest.

The protesting members then left their seats amidst complete pandemonium and staged a demonstration in front of the convener while raising slogans ‘Go Musharraf Go’.

After the ADP and SNF members boycotted the proceedings and walked out convener Syed Ali Raza Shah put the proposal to vote. The 23 members present in the session endorsed it by raising their hands and it was passed.

Afterwards, District Nazim Mohammed Bakhsh Arijo took floor and admitted that the district government had failed in providing health facilities to people.

He said that he had supported the government’s primary health project and had Larkana included in the project, which envisaged Rs20,000 to 30,000 salary for male and female doctors to be paid by the federal government.

He regretted that the council members had requisitioned the council’s session without trying to understand the project.

The ADP members accused the nazim of ignoring the council and demanded that he should step down after he had confessed to his failure in providing basic health facilities to people.

Dr Mahesh Kumar and Babu Serwar Siyal called for deferring the project for three months and said instead the district government should concentrate on improving existing health facilities in the district.

The convener later constituted a committee and prorogued the session.
