CHITRAL: NGOs urged to join relief work

CHITRAL, April 27: Nazim of Chitral district Maghfirat Shah has urged the non-governmental organisations to join relief activities in the avalanche-hit areas of his district. He has also asked the provincial and federal governments to rush in assistance for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure in the affected areas.

Speaking at a meeting of the district council here on Friday, he said that area-wise, Chitral was the largest district in the province where 80 per cent of the existing 1,200-km-long road network was hit by avalanches, while the network of irrigation channels was also affected.

He said that billions of rupees were required for the reconstruction of facilities, reiterating the district government’s resolve to plead the case with the provincial and federal governments.

Most of the members expressed their dissatisfaction over the volume of relief goods in avalanche-hit areas and termed it a joke. They demanded a meaningful aid for the affected people.

The council was unanimous in their demand for registration of a criminal case against the former DCO for embezzling funds. The nazim said that action would be taken against the official as per the procedures provided under the law.
