HYDERABAD: Anti-dam body puts off sit-in to welcome CJP

HYDERABAD, May 6: The Anti-Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Dam Action Committee has decided to postpone a sit-in it planned to hold at Kamoo Shaheed on May 12-20 to participate in a rally welcoming the Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry during his visit to Karachi on May 12.

The committee’s meeting held on Saturday at the residence of MPA Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi observed that the CJP’s reinstatement was not anybody’s personal problem. It concerned each and every Pakistani as it was a question of the supremacy and independence of judiciary, the meeting said.

The meeting slammed the demolition of ancient Sindhi villages in Karachi and called for an end to the practice.

The meeting condemned reports about the proposed bifurcation of Thatta district and warned that the move would be resisted not only by the people of Thatta but also by the people of entire province.

The meeting criticised land-grabbing allegedly by a ruling party on the outskirts of Karachi especially in Malir district and warned the government of serious consequences if it did not stop the process of land grabbing.

The meeting offered fateha on the sad demise of noted intellectual, agriculturist and historian M. H. Panhwar.

The convenor of the committee Syed Qaim Ali Shah who is also provincial president of People’s Party Parliamentarians presided over the meeting, which was attended by Jamaat-i-Islami leader Maulana Abdul Waheed Qureshi, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) leader Azam Jehangiri, Awami Tehrik leader Ayaz Latif Palijo, Sindh Taeaqqi-Pasand Party leader Abdul Hameed Memon, Abrar Qazi, Dr. Najeeb Memon, Khalid Dhamrah, MPAs Zahid Ali Bhurgri and Syed Ali Nawaz Shah.
