Ex-SBA official moves to counter Mirpurkhas polls: District boxing row
KARACHI, June, 25: While the district officials of the province have already completed Sindh Boxing Association (SBA) elections, previous secretary has circulated nomination forms to district associations announcing that polls will be held on Wednesday in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, SBA elections have already been held in Mirpurkhas on June 22 in which Jameel Gul and Ali Akbar Shah were elected president and secretary of the association.
However, Akram Khan, still claiming to be the secretary of SBA, has asked district officials through a letter to send nominations for various posts of the provincial association. The most surprising factor is that Akram has circulated the nomination form and meeting of the so-called general body meeting of SBA, after elections held in Mirpurkhas.
Astonishingly, among the agenda is point number five which says “any other point to be discussed with the permission of the chairman” although there is no such post in the SBA.
The letter also has a fair bit of ambiguity as it says that general body meeting will be held under the “chairmanship” of president of SBA Shakeel Durrani although it is incomprehensible how a meeting could be held under the chairmanship of a president.
Surprisingly, Akram has sent the letter to those district officials who have already been elected as SBA officials on June 22. Another interesting part of the whole episode is that sports officer for Government of Sindh, Makhdoom Irshad Ali, who supervised Mirpurkhas elections by a rebellious group of officials, is also among the recipients of the agenda.
While Akram has sent letters to district officials on SBA letterhead mentioning himself as secretary, and Shakeel Durrani and Anwar Chowdhry as president and honorary life president of the association, it appears to be a last-ditch effort to counter the district officials who have revolted against PBF chairman Anwar Chowdhry which is believed to be because of his one-man show.
Asghar Baloch, who is secretary of Karachi South Boxing Association (KSBA) and was elected executive joint secretary of SBA on June 22, said Pakistan Boxing Federation-backed Akram had been desperately trying to regain control over the SBA after the elections.
“We will not respond to his (Akram) call to send nomination. It is nothing but a joke as we have already held the elections. Akram has been running from pillar to post now to request the district officials to contest in fake SBA elections on Wednesday. But 11 out of 16 districts of the province have already expressed confidence in the new SBA officials,” said the official who is one of the recipients of SBA general body meeting agenda.
The official confirmed that SBA didn’t have any chairman, adding that PBF wanted to appease officials by what he called distribution of new posts specially created this year.
Asghar said Chowdhry, who had been debarred by International Boxing Association (AIBA) for life over embezzlement charges, was trying to retain his grip over Sindh boxing affairs as new leadership would make things difficult for him in the PBF elections scheduled in August next year.
