Supreme Court orders ‘torture’ probe

KARACHI, Aug 15: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into allegations that police forced a group of prisoners in a robbery case to bite each other as if they were bears and dogs.

The court heard that eight suspects had been forced to strip naked and bite each other in a replay of traditional dog-and-bear fight — a common sport in some parts of the country.

The incident in the Kotdiji town triggered uproar in the regional press, prompting the court to take notice of what was described as police “torture”.

Defence lawyer Nisar Abro said the men had been falsely accused of robbery following a complaint by a local landlord who suspected one of them of having an affair with his teenaged daughter.—AFP
