Security up in Jhang and Chiniot

JHANG/CHINIOT, Aug 21: Security has been tightened around government offices and buildings in Jhang and Chiniot after Monday’s grenade attack on two alleged brothels on the outskirts of Chiniot.

The attack by motorcyclists killed a woman and injured four others.

In Jhang, police have erected walls of sand bags around the district council and district courts and cordoned off the police lines with barbed wire.

Jhang District Police Officer (DPO) Amjad Javed Saleemi addressed a press conference at his office on Tuesday to announce the arrest of criminals, but he did not mention Monday’s incident. He felt uneasy with questions about the grenade attack and avoided direct answers to most reporters’ questions.

However, in reply to a question by Dawn regarding identification of the attackers or prospects of their arrest, the DPO said he would soon brief the media on this issue. He said it was premature to attribute the attack to any religious outfit or madressa students. He said the attack might be the result of old enmity between two groups.

According to a report from Chiniot, the city police have registered a case against unidentified attackers, but no one has been arrested in this connection.

The City police station house officer said police had no clue to the attackers. Sources from the bomb disposal squad said the grenades used in the attack were made locally.

Separately, the city police arrested a drug pusher and seized 600 bottles of liquor from him on Tuesday. Police officials said they raided Muhammad Ali’s house, arrested him with liquor and registered a case against him.
