Benazir tells party to organise prayers

LAHORE, Oct 20: Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto has called upon the party organisations across the country to offer ‘Ghaibana Namaz-i-Janaza’ on Sunday for the workers who were killed in the attack on the PPP procession on Thursday night.

Party’s Punjab president Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi has accordingly appealed to the workers to pay tribute to their comrades for their sacrifice for the cause of the country and the people, and pray to God for their peaceful eternal rest.

In a press statement issued here on Saturday, Mr Qureshi said terrorists and extremists could not take democratic forces hostage. He said the manner in which the party and the chairperson braved the attack demanded of the workers to turn their grief into determination to serve the people and enabling them to achieve their political and socio-economic rights.

He said the PPP would continue to support the people in their struggle for their rights.

Meanwhile, PPP Punjab secretary-general Chaudhry Ghulam Abbas also appealed to the party organisations to offer prayers for their colleagues killed in the twin blasts.

He said in a press statement that obscurantists were bent upon taking peaceful democratic struggle hostage at a time when the next parliamentary elections were only a few weeks away.

He said undemocratic forces wanted to frighten political parties, particularly the PPP, which were fighting for a liberal and progressive Pakistan.
