Princess of Gujrat all set to invade racecourse

LAHORE, Nov 3: Three-year-old filly Princess Of Gujrat with an impressive victory on the trot is fancied to win the November Cup during the 10th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse on Sunday.

Contesting in the sixth race, Princess Of Gujrat had a facile victory to her credit in the Khanewal Plate, a class-IV division-I and II race which ran over 1400 metres.

Although she has been penalised by 18 pounds in weight scales, she, being a fine sprinter, should edge out Headingly to make it two in a row.

Discovery and Charismatic may fight for the place on the board.

Three-year-old bay colt from Bletch Dancer out-of-Shateen, Lucifer, looks a good proposition in the seventh race.

The colt had his first run after a long absence on last Sunday, finishing off the frame. Lucifer was trained with Headingly last year and enjoyed good season with two wins, three seconds and one third in six outings.

He should register his first victory of the season on Sunday to prove his worth.

Volcano, Lovely Gate and Mythical may fight for the board.

Four-year-old bay colt Sher-e-Punjab and three year-old filly Lucky Cat are prominent contenders for the Mianwali Cup.

Sher-e-Punjab is a speedy colt while Lucky Cat enjoys a good placing in handicap carrying seven stones ten pounds. It is often seen that speed beats handicap and keeping this in view, the colt, Sher-e-Punjab, should edge out Lucky Cat.

Miss Play and Reborn may fight for place.

The Khushab Plate, a term race for two-year-old half-bred colts and fillies (Maidens), has a small field of seven runners barring last-minute withdrawals.

Colt Vallen Day is the only runner who is experienced while the others are making their debut on the track.

Results of two-year-old’s racing are unpredictable because it is difficult to asses their strength and capabilities before they prove them with their running.

For training too it is difficult to bring them in reasonable fitness to stand the strain of gruelling contests as a very few are good trainers, capable to deliver.

As a result, most of them go out of racing prematurely and not a season passes without several splendid two-year-olds fade out or fail to perform like three-year-old horses.

That causes a big damage to country’s young stock with a big number being ruined. This will be the second race in racing order.

Murad King, Ikon and Cross Ruff are the form horses in first, third and fourth races, knocking at the victory door. The question arises whether their respective stables fancy them so.

A card of seven races has been drawn for Sunday. The last two races will be contested over 1200 metres while the remaining five will be run over 1000 metres.

The first race will be held at 12.30pm.
