HYDERABAD: PPP activists held in midnight raids
Six of them were produced before the judicial magistrates, who granted bail to them. However, the accused were remanded to judicial custody after they failed to furnish their surety.
The raids began after the PPP activists protested against house arrest of Ms Benazir Bhutto in federal capital. The main protest was staged at Hyderabad by-pass near Bhittai town where party activists blocked a section of the by- pass and lit bonfires. It caused traffic jams. They fled from the scene when police arrived there.
Bhittai Nagar police lodged a case under section 188 PPC (violation of Section 144 CrPC imposed in the province) vide crime no 103/07.
Police subsequently picked up Ejaz Maulai, Imran Ali, Zahid Jatoi, Raheem Chandio, Ghulam Mohammad Shoro and Qasim Shoro. They were granted bail by judicial magistrate-I in a sum of Rs30,000 each.
But they were remanded to judicial custody when they failed to submit surety. Police also picked-up Sohail and Jibran. The absconding accused included Dilshad Thaheem, Babu, Javed, Abdullah, Ramzan Mirbahar and Aftab.
A party press release said that raids were conducted at the residences of Fayyaz shah, Saleem Shah, Roshan Solangi, Aftab Khanzada and Imran Pathan.
REMANDED: The Anti-Terrorism Court Hyderabad has remanded Allah Dino alias Asif Baladi in police custody for another three days for interrogation in connection with an explosives case.
The case was lodged vide crime no 25/07 at the Qasimabad police station in which activists of other nationalist party, including Zulfikar Bhurgari, Maula Bux Nohani, Hameed Samejo, Musa Samejo and Ali Nawaz Leghari were already challaned.
Latifabad police claimed to have arrested him on November 6, at Jinnah International terminal while he was returning from Quetta through a private airline.
He had gone missing in June 2006 in Karachi. He was one of those missing persons for whom several protests were held by nationalist organisations.
SILENT PROTEST: Journalists staged a silent protest in the premises of Hyderabad press club against curbs on media and suspension of private TV channels’ transmission by the government.
They wore black armbands and tied the band around their mouth in protest. They put their pens, cameras and bags on the road. They carried a banner, inscribed with slogan against curbs on media.
Resolutions were adopted on the occasion, condemning ban on TV channels’ transmission. The resolution condemned harassment of journalists and demanded withdrawal of cases against them. It vowed to continue their struggle for their freedom of expression.
KILLED: A two-and-half year old boy died in a road mishap while his parents and sister were seriously injured on Fatima Jinnah road near circuit house late on Friday night.
Aqeel Ahmed was on his way on his motorbike when it rammed into a truck near circuit house as a result of which his two and half year old son Abu Bakar died on the spot while his daughter Tayyaba and wife were injured. They were taken to Civil Hospital.
