Leaders, activists roughed up as police arrest over 380 : Third day of protest in Sindh

HYDERABAD, Nov 15: More than 380 activists of Pakistan People’s Party, including over 50 leaders and activists of the party’s women wing, were arrested after skirmishes with police in different parts of Sindh on the third day of the party’s country-wide protest on Thursday against the house arrest of party chairperson, imposition of emergency and curbs on media.

Police roughed up MPA Sassui Palijo in Thatta before putting her under arrest for a brief period and used batons and tear gas shells to break up processions and demonstrations by PPP activists.

In Khairpur, police arrested over 100 lawyers and party activists after hundreds of activists managed to reach the press club.

In Larkana, police arrested 23 after clashes with party workers during processions and demonstrations in Naudero, Ratodero and Wagan towns while courts released 45 PPP workers including MNA Khalid Iqbal Memon and MPA Ghulam Mujdid Isran.

Police lobbed tear gas shells on the protesters and used batons before arresting 10 in Larkana and seven in Naudero. Two activists were arrested in Qambar and Wagan towns.

In Mirpurkhas and Umerkot, police arrested 28 activists when they staged demonstrations and burnt an effigy of Gen Musharraf.

Police arrested 15 women including MPA Shamim Ara Panhwar after dozens of activists staged a rally and burnt an effigy of Gen Musharraf.

Thirteen protesters were arrested in Kot Ghulam Mohammad and Umerkot after they staged a demonstration and burnt an effigy of Gen Musharraf.

Members of Mirpurkhas DBA and Umerkot boycotted courts for an hour. Police arrested 29 activists after they brought out a rally in Kotri.

In Hyderabad, police arrested 25 activists after the party’s women wing staged a march.Meanwhile, the court remanded 41 PPP activists including MPA Pir Amjad Shah Jilani to judicial custody.

In Tando Allahyar, police arrested 50 activists but booked only 19 because the lock-up had no more room. They had courted arrest during a demonstration.

Police arrested 14 activists when they staged a procession in Jacobabad.

Police used batons and fired in the air when angry activists refused to clear the main Sanghar-Hyderabad road in Jhol town of Sanghar district and arrested three.

Partial strike was observed in Shikarpur and Garhi Yasin and an SHO received head injuries in the clash with protesters.

Police arrested about a dozen activists after the protest.

In Tando Mohammad Khan, a large number of activists staged a rally amid heavy police deployment. Police remained on the sidelines and did not interfere in the proceedings.

In Naushahro Feroze, scores of party workers and leaders staged a rally. Complete strike was observed in Nawabshah in response to a call for strike given by PPP. The strike was also observed in Sakrand, Qazi Ahmed, Daur, 60-Miles and Jam Saheb.

Police registered a case against eight activists and arrested five of them after PPP activists staged a rally in Chhachhro town of Mithi.

In Badin, a large number of activists staged a rally, which started its march from the bus stand and terminated at the press club. The protesters staged a sit-in on Shah Latif road but police did not try to stop them.
