Justice Tariq Mehmood complains of maltreatment

ISLAMABAD, Nov 26: With former Supreme Court Bar Association president Munir A. Malik already seriously ill, another former SCBA president Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood has complained of kidney infection.

According to sources, Justice Mehmood has written a letter to the registrar of the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take notice of the maltreatment that he was being meted out in prison.

Justice Mehmood, who emerged to prominence first by opting not to take oath under the PCO in the Balochistan High Court and then taking part in the movement for Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry’s reinstatement, has complained in his letter that he was kept along with criminals charged with murder and was not allowed medical treatment.

He further complained that he was provided contaminated water and stale food which has put extra pressure on his body organs, especially causing infection to his kidneys.

Justice Mehmood, who was also one of the counsels for Justice Chaudhry, was held by police along with other senior advocates following the slapping of emergency in the country on Nov 3.
