PIA keep pressure on Lahore Shalimar: Quaid-i-Azam Trophy

LAHORE, Dec 2: Propelled by two more unbeaten tons from Fahad Iqbal (156) and Anwar Ali (100), pool ‘B’ leaders Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) posted a formidable first innings total of 564-5 declared against Lahore Shalimar on Sunday, the second day of the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy championship at the Gaddafi Stadium.

At stumps, Lahore Shalimar were 52 without loss.

Served by a century on the first day by Agha Sabir, PIA held further sway over Lahore Shalimar bowlers as Fahad stayed at the crease for 211 and Anwar for 140 minutes before declaring the innings after 126.2 overs.

Fahad and Anwar plundered 224 runs in their unbroken sixth-wicket stand while Muhammad Naved (184-3) and Shahzad Ali (117-0), the two top bowlers for Lahore Shalimar, proved to be very expensive.Meanwhile at the Multan Stadium, a fine knock of 90 by opener Riffatullah and Humayun Farhat (55) helped pool ‘A’ leaders Habib Bank Limited (HBL) survive a scare before earning a 56-run lead against Multan.

The home team finished the first knock at 220 after resuming at 218-9. Kamran Hussain finished with 4-36. In reply HBL at 201-5 found a useful sixth-wicket stand between Humayun and their captain Hasan Raza (36) of 67 runs to earn the lead. But three quick dismissals later on brought their end of the day score to 276-8.

A six-wicket burst for 64 by paceman Wahab Riaz and later a fine undefeated knock by opener Imran Nazir put National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), the runners-up in pool ‘A’, in strong position against the lowly-rated Customs, who did, however, manage to give the bankers a run for their money at the NBP Stadium, Karachi.

Wahab helped the bankers bowl out Customs for 242 in the first innings, despite fighting knocks by Zahoor Elahi (91) and Asif Iqbal (73), to seize a slim lead of 23 runs in the first innings. NBP, by close of play, were 130-1 in the second knock, making it an overall lead of 153 with nine wickets in hand as their skipper Imran hit a 69-ball 71.

Leg-spinner Kashif Bhatti took five wickets to help Hyderabad earn a creditable first innings lead of 167 against a strong Wapda, who were once leading in group ‘A’ but are now bracketed with NBP with 39 points.

Against Hyderabad’s first innings’ mammoth total of 339, Wapda were 172 in just 53 overs with an unbeaten 64 by their only significant scorer Kashif Raza. Hyderabad, in the second knock, were 29 without loss.

Meanwhile at KRL Stadium, Rawalpindi, both openers Azhar Ali (113) and Mohammad Wasim (138) hit centuries to steer Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) post a hefty total of 347-5 in their first innings against Karachi Blues.
