Video umpire finally makes his mark in hockey

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 3: The video umpire finally came into action in the Pakistan-Australian match here at the 29th Champions Trophy hockey tournament, making his first ruling on Sunday.

Korean umpire Lae Kim Hong awarded a penalty corner to Australian team in the last five minutes of the match but later reserved the decision after protests by Pakistan captain Salman Akbar who claimed that the ball hit Australia player on the foot.

Korean umpire listened to Pakistan captain’s view point and referred the decision to video umpire. Korean umpire signalled in a similar fashion to that in cricket, requesting the video umpire to watch it on his monitor.

The video umpire reversed the decision to tell the Korean umpire to signal for a free hit.—APP
