Polio case detected

PESHAWAR, Dec 12: Another polio case has been detected in South Waziristan.

A three-month-old boy was found three days ago to be a polio victim. He is from Mohallah Wadan of Sarokai tehsil.

Dr Waheed Khan, Deputy Director of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), said the child had not received oral polio vaccine because of refusal by parents of the entire area.No vaccination had taken place in the area since August, a World Health Organisation official said. The area was under the influence of Taliban, the official said.

He said Pakistan had recorded 21 cases of the disease during the current year but it was feared that polio virus existed in several districts of the NWFP and tribal agencies. “There is a high risk of polio transmission in December,” he said.
