Mobs kill 3 Kenyan policemen

NAIROBI, Dec 26: Three Kenyan policemen were killed by an angry mob of opposition supporters who accused the government of trying to rig presidential polls, police said on Wednesday as tension mounted on the eve of the vote.

The three were among hundreds of policemen deployed in the western Nyanza province to reinforce security ahead of Thursday’s election, a tight race between incumbent President Mwai Kibaki and rival Raila Odinga.

“I can confirm that mobs killed two policemen in Suba district and a third in (neighbouring) Nyatike district,” provincial police commander Grace Kaindi said.

She added that 10 other policemen were wounded in the incidents, which took place late Tuesday.

Police fired tear gas in the nearby Kisii township to disperse another group of youths who were demonstrating against the presence of administrative police (AP) near polling stations.—AFP
