KARACHI: Rocket fired at police HQ

KARACHI, Dec 30: All business activities in the city remained suspended for the third consecutive day, Sunday, as life remained paralyzed in the wake of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s assassination and the nationwide disturbances that followed the tragic incident.

A few more incidents of violence were reported on Sunday which included a rocket attack targeted against the police headquarters in Garden area.

The rocket landed on the main road running parallel to the police headquarters. No casualties were, however, reported in the attack.

Public transport remained off the road and quite a small number of private vehicles plied on different. People preferred to stay indoors amid fear of violence while an acute shortage of fuel and closure of most fuel stations forced commuters not to opt for commuting.

In Lyari, where some half a dozen lives were lost in Saturday’s violence, off and on gunshots were heard, keeping residents of the affected localities in the grip of panic and fear.

Rangers were stationed in the Lyari Community Development Project building, which was ransacked in the previous day’s rioting.

Early Sunday morning, a small group of armed youths attacked the Memon Goth police station in Gadap Town but law-enforcement agencies personnel dispersed them. Miscreants riding motorcycles tried to attack a garment factory in Saudabad area of Malir but police foiled their bid.

Meanwhile, an Edhi morgue staff said they had received a total of 70 bodies from different parts of the city during the violence since Thursday evening.
