KARACHI, Jan 11: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to introduce a five-year LLB degree programme in public sector universities and degree-awarding institutions.

The National Curriculum Revision Committee (NCRC) meeting held recently at the HEC headquarters, Islamabad, reviewed the plan. NCRC members were apprised of the setting up of a law university of international standards.

A project prepared for the purpose has been approved by the Planning Commission to establish the main campus of the university in Islamabad and two sub-campuses, one each in Lahore and Karachi. In the second phase, two more campuses, one each in Peshawar and Quetta, will be established.

Prof Ahmed Ali Khan, Project Director of the National Law University, said that most of the work to make the law university functional had been completed and the classes at the Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi campuses would start in March 2008.

Explaining the salient features of the proposed five-year LLB curriculum, he said an effort had been made to bring the new scheme in line with the modern curricula offered by top class universities of the world.

The scheme envisages a broad understanding of the social, political and economic contexts within which the Pakistani and global legal system operates.

Prof Riazul Haq Tariq, Member Academics (HEC), highlighting the significance of the legal studies, said that with the support of the HEC and the Pakistan Bar Council, an “accreditation centre” for law colleges would be set up at the HEC to scrutinise the performance of all private and public sector law colleges.

The committee thoroughly reviewed the proposed curriculum and prepared another draft curriculum which would be sent to all members of NCRC for their comments and suggestions.

BCS degree programme

The process of admissions to a three-year BCS degree programme has commenced at six government colleges in the metropolis, according to an announcement made on Friday.

The six colleges are: Government D.J. Science College, Government Commerce College, Government College Stadium Road, Government National College, Sir Syed Government College for Women and Government Khursheed Girls College.

The last date for the submission of admission forms is Jan 14.

SSUET orientation ceremony

The Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology has organised an orientation ceremony on Monday for its BS Degree Courses students of the academic year 2008.

According to the, heads of faculties and departments will make speeches which would be followed by a talk on Aligarh traditions by Engineer Mohammad Zakir Ali Khan. Brig (Retd) Qamarus Salam Khan will speak on the role of Aligarh Muslim University students in Pakistan Movement.

SSUET Chancellor Z.A. Nizami will give a brief account of the struggle by the Aligarh Muslim University alumni which ultimately culminated in the establishment of the SSUT.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Sayed Nazir Ahmed will apprise the new students of the university’s policies and the facilities it offers to its students.

MSc Home Economicsresults

The University of Karachi on Friday announced the results of MSc Home Economics (previous) annual examination 2007.

A total of 97 candidates appeared in the examination and 87 of them were declared successful.

Faculty of Pharmacy

The foundation-stone laying ceremony for the new building of KU’s Faculty of Pharmacy will be performed on the campus on Saturday.

This was announced by a KU spokesman in a statement issued on Friday.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui will preside over the ceremony.

He will also lay the foundation stone of the new building for classrooms of Science and Arts faculties for the KU evening programme.—Agencies
