EU team ‘talks to all, except journalists’

BAHAWALPUR, Jan 17: A two-member European Union team of observers on Thursday visited the city and met hopefuls for the general election.

The visitors saw District Nazim Tariq Cheema, Baleeghur Rehman, a PML-N candidate from NA-185 (Bahawalpur-III), and many other hopefuls. During the meeting, Baleeghur Rehman expressed his reservations about the election arrangements.

The district nazim apprised them of the political situation and election scene at NA-187 (Yazman tehsil) from where former chief minister Pervaiz Elahi is contesting election.

The EU team also sought views from people from all walks of life. They, however, declined to talk to journalists with whom there was a scheduled get-together at the press club on Thursday.

As the press club members welcomed the visitors, one of the observers objected to the presence of such a large number of mediamen and the camera crew of various electronic channels. One of them was not shy of facing the press while his companion looked offended. Both walked out of the press club, saying they would meet the media next time under a scheduled programme.
