KARACHI: Harkat men challenge conviction

KARACHI, Jan 21: Three militants allegedly belonging to the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen al-Alami have filed an appeal against their conviction by an anti-terrorism court for an unsuccessful attempt on President Pervez Musharraf’s life in 2002.

Abdul Waheed Katpar, counsel for the convicts, said the appeal had been filed in the Sindh High Court within seven days of the pronouncement of the ATC judgment in accordance with a procedure spelled out under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.On Jan 15, 2008, the ATC sentenced Harkat chief Mohammad Imran, his deputy Mohammad Hanif and the outfit’s treasurer Mohammad Ashraf to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of all charges.

Mr Katpar said the prosecution did not have a shred of evidence. He said the ATC placed reliance on the confessions of the accused which had been obtained long after the end of their police remand.
