Germany to play England in Berlin friendly

LONDON, Jan 25: Germany will play England in a friendly at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on Nov 19, the Football Association (FA) announced on Friday.

The match will be the first meeting between the two old rivals since their Munich World Cup qualifier in 2001 when England triumphed 5-1.

The last time they played in Berlin was in a 1972 European Championship quarter-final second leg, which ended goalless with West Germany going through 3-1 on aggregate to the four-team tournament, which they won.

“This should be a great match,” England’s new manager Fabio Capello said on the FA website (www.thefa.com). “I’m delighted this fixture has been arranged, it should be a real challenge and something the players will look forward to.”

England’s next game, their first under the Italian, is against Switzerland at Wembley on Feb 6. They also play France in Paris on March 26.

No summer friendlies have yet been organised before England begin their 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign in Andorra on Sep 6. — Reuters
