ISLAMABAD, Jan 31: Chief of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday told the ambassadors of the European Union countries and the United States that his party had no confidence in the present Election Commission and, that free and fair elections were not possible under the Musharraf regime.

According to sources in the party, Mr Sharif held two separate meetings with 18 ambassadors of the EU countries and the US ambassador during which he apprised them about his party’s position on various issues, including the coming elections and the war against terrorism.

Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Rohita Bogollagama also called on Mr Sharif at the Frontier House.

The sources said Mr Sharif told the ambassadors that his party had so far submitted more than 1,100 complaints to the ECP, no action had been taken on them. He said his party was not attending the meetings being convened by the ECP as it had no faith in it.

PML-N chairman Raja Zafarul Haq and former MNA Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan attended these meetings.

Mr Sharif, who is scheduled to travel to Dubai on Sunday, said the PML-N believed that the war against terrorism could be won only when there would be real democracy in the country. He said dictators could not stop terrorism.

Mr Sharif said the Musharraf regime was impeding his party’s efforts for ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.

According to a party handout, Mr Sharif briefed the EU diplomats on the country’s political situation at the residence of French ambassador.

US Ambassador to Pakistan Ann Peterson called on Mr Sharif at the Frontier House. Pakistan-US relations and the regional situation came under discussion at the meeting.

In his meeting with the Sri Lankan foreign minister, Mr Sharif appreciated the continuity of democracy and establishment of a democratic government in Sri Lanka and said it was a role model for other countries in the region.
