Eleven Indian fishermen held

KARACHI, Feb 10: Coast guards seized two Indian boats and arrested 11 fishermen for illegally trawling in Pakistan’s waters in the Arabian Sea, maritime officials said on Sunday.

They were caught on Sunday 34 kilometres inside Pakistani territorial waters, Maritime Security Agency official Mohammad Tariq said.

The fishermen have been “warned time and again not to indulge in illegal fishing but they repeatedly come into our exclusive economic zone to benefit from rich fish resources” at the mouth of the Indus delta, Tariq said.

The men have been turned over to police in Karachi, he added.

Pakistan and India frequently seize each other’s fishermen, accusing them of violating their respective zones in the Arabian Sea, before swapping hundreds of them in exchanges.—AFP
