HYDERABAD: Consequences disastrous if polls rigged: Khuhro

HYDERABAD, Feb 14: Former leader of Opposition in Sindh assembly, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro warned on Thursday that if elections were not held in a free, fair and transparent manner, the consequences would be disastrous and the situation would get out of control.

He said at a press conference at the residence of nazim of Pithoro union council, Pir Taj Shah Jilani in Tando Allahyar that boycotting elections would have amounted to extending indirect support to the tyrant. Hence, the Pakistan People’s Party decided to take part in elections even after the great tragedy of Dec 27, he said.

Mr Khuhro said that the elements behind the assassination of former Prime Minister Ms Benazir Bhutto were the enemies of Pakistan and democracy who aimed to spread chaos and anarchy in the country. The Dec 27 tragedy had shaken the foundations of not only Pakistan but also the entire Muslim world, he said.

He alleged that the Election Commission, which was supposed to be an independent institution, had become a slave to rulers’ whims.

Only the PPP was in a position to extricate the country from the insurmountable crisis, and if elections were held in a transparent manner, the party would sweep the polls throughout Pakistan.

The spiritual leader of Jilani Jamaat, Pir Taj Shah Jilani, said that the entire country was mourning the martyrdom of Ms Benazir Bhutto. His Jamaat would support PPP candidates, he said.

JUI-F: The president of Hyderabad chapter of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl , Moulana Taj Mohammad Nahyoon on Thursday his party’s announced support for PML-N candidate for NA-220, Sahibzada Shabbir Hassan Ansari.

He appealed to party workers at a news conference at the press club to cast votes in favour of PML-N candidate
