Army outclass Police to retain volleyball crown

PESHAWAR, Feb 29: Defending champions Pakistan Army outplayed Pakistan Police 3-0 in the 22nd National Junior Men’s Volleyball Championship final to retain the crown here at the PSB Coaching Centre on Friday.

Army, led by Zaheer Abbas, Mohammad Siddique and Nadeem Ashraf as the main spikers, showed tremendous class against the Police.

Police opened the account in the first set but when they reached 5-0, the Army fought back by levelling the tally at 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, 13-13 and 15-all, before claiming the set 25-16.

Army, after this, took full control. It was in the second set when Army’s setter Mohammad Imran succeeded in dodging the Police’s main blockers Mohammad Zubair and Mohammad Ali. And as a result the soldiers kept up pressure by showing some beautiful spikings.

Army’s main spikers — Zaheer, Siddique and Nadeem — made three shooting ranges at the net, which made the task of Police blockers very difficult. Army took the second set 25-15 and thus cemented their position for the title.

In the third set though the Police showed some resistance, Army still managed to take it 25-20 to retain the title in straight sets.—APP
