Protest as reckless driving kills child

LAHORE, March 16: Residents threw traffic out of gear on Manga Mandi bypass after a tractor-trolley knocked to death a seven-year-old girl on Raiwind Road near Manga Town on Sunday.

According to Edhi officials, Hozaifa, daughter of Abdul Hafeez (of Hall Ranjha Town), died on the spot.

Locals gathered on the spot soon after the accident, blocked the road and chanted slogans against allowing heavy vehicles on the road. Manga Mandi SPO Aoun Muhammad Shah told Dawn that the protesters blocked road for half an hour and traffic was diverted to other roads. He said the protesters demanded construction of speed breakers and non-entry of heavy vehicles on the road.

The official said the protesters dispersed after negotiations with the police (assisted by the National Highway and Motorway Police) and local MPA Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor Mayo and assurance that their demands would be forwarded to the higher authorities.

Meanwhile, a devotee was killed and another woman injured when a mini-bus hit them at a shrine on Ferozepur Road.

The Nishtar Colony police said Naseem Bibi, 60, was going along with her son Muhammad Haneef on a motorcycle. At a shrine, she asked her son to stop the motorbike as she wanted to pay homage to the saint and as she moved on a Kasur-bound van hit her, killing her on the spot. Another woman was injured at the same spot.

In another accident, a trailer crushed to death a 14-year-old boy in Old Anarkali area on Sunday.

Police said Yasir of Kachi Abadi, Mayo Hospital, was crossing the road near his house when the long vehicle hit him.

He was rushed to Mayo Hospital in critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries.
