Pakistan, India to exchange prisoners’ lists

NEW DELHI, March 28: Pakistan and India will exchange lists of civilian prisoners in each other’s country on Monday.

Briefing newsmen at Pakistan High Commission here on Friday, Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner Afrasiab said as agreed in the meeting of Pakistan-India Judicial Committee held here on Feb 26, Indian side would hand over the list to Pakistan High Commission while Pakistan Foreign Office would give the list to Indian High Commission on March 31.

The Indian chapter of Judicial Committee will visit jails in Pakistan next month on dates to be agreed through diplomatic channels. This would be followed by a return visit to Indian jails by the Pakistani chapter of the committee.

The committee had also recommended that special consideration, on compassionate and humanitarian basis, be accorded to women, juvenile and disabled prisoners for their repatriation.

The Judicial Committee comprises Justice (retd) Mr Abdul Qadeer Chaudhry, Justice (retd) Mr Fazal Karim, Justice (retd) Mr Nasir Aslam Zahid and Justice (retd) Mr Mian Mohammad Ajmal from Pakistan’s side and Justice (retd) Mr Nagendra Rai, Justice (retd) Mr Amarjeet Chaudhry, Justice (retd) Mr A. S. Gill and Justice (retd) and Mr M. A. Khan from Indian side.—APP
