Asma elected HRCP chief

KARACHI, April 1: Asma Jehangir and Iqbal Haider have been elected chairperson and co-chairperson respectively of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan for a tenure of three years – 2008 to 2010.

The HRCP at its annual general meeting held on March 30 in Lahore elected four vice chairpersons: Dr Mehdi Hassan (for Punjab), Ghazi Salahuddin (Sindh), Musarrat Hilali (NWFP) and Surraiya Amiruddin (Balochistan). Shahid Kardar was elected treasurer.

Former HRCP director I. A. Rehman, under the new rules of management, was re-designated secretary general and chief executive of the HRCP.

The meeting also elected 26 members of the council.
