Greeks seek tougher anti-doping measures for weighlifters
ATHENS, April 16: The Greek National Olympic Committee said Wednesday it wanted to see tougher anti-doping measures as the fallout from a weightlifting scandal gathered steam.
The Greek sporting establishment was horrified when on April 4 weightlifting coach Christos Iakovou was suspended after 11 team athletes tested positive to a banned substance in a surprise checkup by the Wada.
Iakovou resigned and was suspended after the first samples from the unidentified athletes tested positive and the Greek weightlifting association requested tests on the athletes’ second sample following the March 7 surprise test ahead of the European championships.
“Having stronger punishments for doping offences can be counter-productive,” the Greek NOC said—AFP
