Pakistan win Karachi one-dayer

KARACHI, April 20: As Pakistan celebrated their record-breaking 11th straight victory in One-day Internationals on Saturday night here at the National Stadium, the battered and bruised Bangladesh team was left licking its wounds after second 5-0 whitewash against the hosts (partially reported in Sunday’s edition).

The imposing 150-run win was set up by Man-of-the-Series Salman Butt’s splendid 136 that guided Pakistan to 329-9, their highest total against Bangladesh in 23 one-dayers. His aggregate of 451 was the highest ever for a five-match bilateral series.

Chasing an unlikely 330 in the final one-dayer Bangladesh never really had the chance of making a decent reply as they bundled out for 179 after Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul rocked the top-order batting with four wickets in 12 deliveries.

Asif, in his second match after a six-month layoff because of an elbow injury that required surgery in Australia, completed a satisfactory rehabilitation by removing Junaid Siddique and Aftab Ahmed in successive balls before accounting for Shakib Al Hasan in his next over.

After Umar Gul had Tamim Iqbal caught at the wicket, Shakib, the in-form left-handed all-rounder, received an unplayable delivery on the off-stump line that clipped the bails.

Bangladesh were now on familiar territory at 23 for four, midway through the seventh over.

Mohammad Ashraful struck a couple of fine strokes in reaching 30 – easily his best score against Pakistan in 10 attempts.

All-rounder Mahmudullah stuck to his guns gamely with an 83-ball 37 as he, wicket-keeper Dhiman Ghosh (29) and tail-ender Abdur Razzak (33) all achieved their career-best scores.

A tumbling Younis Khan catch in the slips to provide Wahab Riaz, playing only in his second ODI, his second wicket.

Afridi’s figures of three for 40 on Saturday took his tally to 12 wickets in five games by far the best haul in the series from either side.

Pakistan’s second 5-0 whitewash over Bangladesh, they meted out the same treatment to them on the 2003 tour by completing the clean sweep at this venue with a 58-run triumph.

While the Pakistan Cricket Board counts its financial losses after being forced to plead with lowly-rated Bangladesh to fill the gap left vacant by the pullout of world champions Australia from a scheduled tour of Pakistan, Malik and a number of his team-mates shortly leave for India to take part in the dollar-filled Indian Premier League that is already underway.
