NAWABSHAH: Compensation paid to riot victims

NAWABSHAH, April 23: District Nazim Faryal Talpur here on Tuesday distributed Rs1.055 million among the businessmen who suffered losses during riots that broke out in Sindh following the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi.Cheques were distributed among 23 cloth merchants, seven goldsmiths and 120 pushcart owners at the Darbar Hall.

Ms Faryal said on the occasion that she had learnt helping the needy from Ms Benazir Bhutto and following her footsteps.

She said that some elements had tried to politicise the assassination but failed.

She said the work for reconstruction of the cloth market would start soon.

People’s Party MPA Ghulam Qadir Chandio, District Naib Nazim Abdul Haq Jamali, Nawabshah taluka PPP president Ziaul Hassan Lanjar and members of different associations were also present there.

STRIKE: Activists of All Pakistan Clerks Association, Population Welfare Department unit, observed pen-down strike and staged a protest demonstration outside their office to pressurise the authorities to accept their demands on Tuesday.

They were carrying placards and were raising slogans for the acceptance of their demands.

They told reporters that they had presented a charter of demand to the population welfare minister.

They said that their demands included 50 per cent job quota for the children of deceased, senior and retired employees, regularisation of contractual employees working in the department for 10 years, cancellation of all deputations and increase in salaries.
