ISLAMABAD, April 26: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said that his party wants reinstatement of deposed judges through a parliamentary resolution by the deadline of April 30.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, the PML-N chief said that he had told PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari that the pre-Nov 3 judiciary should be restored in accordance with the Murree Declaration and the judges’ reinstatement should not be linked to any constitutional package.

He said there was no ambiguity in the Murree Declaration and the deadline for the implementation of it was April 30.

Mr Nawaz said he was hopeful Mr Zardari would also adhere to the pledge made to the nation.

“We want the resolution to be tabled (in the assembly) even before the 30-day deadline. We want to see judges on their seats within minutes of their reinstatement through an executive order soon after the resolution,” he added.

“I signed (the Murree Declaration) in Bhurban in front of the nation and I want to fulfil my pledge,” he said, adding: “I believe my brother Asif Ali Zardari will implement the Murree Declaration in letter and spirit.”

In reply to a question about the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf, he said he had told Mr Zardari that the ‘window of opportunity’ would not remain open for long and there should be no delay in it.

The PML-N leader said that the nation was in trouble because of the presence of Mr Musharraf in the presidency.

He admitted that the PPP wanted to link judges’ reinstatement to the passage of a constitutional package, adding that his party had told the PPP that it was ready to support any constitutional package if it was brought in line with the charter of democracy, but only after the reinstatement of judges through a resolution.

He said there seemed to be no hurdle in the implementation of the Murree Declaration.

In reply to a question about the possibility of the use of Article 58 2(b) by President Musharraf after reinstatement of judges, he said lawmakers “should break hands of the man who dissolves the present parliament”.

The PML-N chief said that the man who had abrogated the Constitution, dismissed assemblies and imprisoned judges should be brought to justice. He said the coalition leaders were bound to bring dictators to book and if they failed to do so, the country could face a disaster.

The PML-N leader said they should make a pledge to the nation that they would not become agents of dictators and intelligence agencies in future.

He admitted that they (political leaders) had been playing the role of agents of agencies, but now they had realized that time had changed. “Many people have been involved in it be they are in judiciary, in politics or in media,” he said, adding that those who were still ‘agents of military dictators’ should know that the nation would no more allow them to continue this practice.

Without naming anyone, he said there were certain people around politicians who were trying to create a rift within the ruling coalition parties and warned that such forces could also use media for the purpose.

Mr Sharif said that media and democracy would only be independent if judiciary was independent.

The PML-N chief said that he was very clear from day one that there should be no Pemra Ordinance and no restrictions on media.
