Wajid, Sara lift singles titles: National Badminton Championships
ISLAMABAD, April 27: Wapda’s Wajid Ali clinched the men’s singles title 2-0 when he defeated the top-ranked national player Umer Zeeshan in the final of 51st National Badminton Championship being played here at the Rodham Hall on Sunday.
In the women’s singles event, National Bank of Pakistan’s (NBP) energetic Sara Khan hammered defending champion Ayesha Khan (also of NBP) to lift the women’s singles title.
Meanwhile, the men’s doubles saw the pair of Rizwan Azam and Muhammad Attique bagging the title while Ayesha Akram and Palwasha Basheer lifted the women’s title. The missed doubles event was won by Imran Mohib and Sadia Arshad.
Wajid Ali in the men’s singles final displayed quick reflexes when he won the first set 21-17. However, his opponent Zeeshan fought hard to make a comeback in the second set when the game was levelled thrice — 10-10 and 11-11. But the set went to Wajid Ali who won it 21-15.
Sara Khan (NBP) defeated defending Champion Ayesha Akram (NBP) after a hard fought three sets — 20-22, 22-20, 21-13.
In the men’s doubles final, Muhammad Attique and Rizwan Azam beat Wajid Ali and Ahsan Qamar after bagging all the three sets by 28-26, 17-21, 21-14.
In the women’s doubles final, Ayesha Akram and Palwasha Basheer (NBP) sidelined Sara Mohmand and Sara Khan (NBP) by 21-6, 21-18.
Sadia Arshad and Imran Mohib (Wapda) defeated Palwasha Basheer and Muhammad Attique 17-21, 21-17, 23-21 in the mixed doubles final.
Tahir Javed (Wapda) beat Nadeem Javed (Wapda) 16-21, 21-10, 21-13 in the veteran’s singles final.
Veteran’s doubles final, Nadeem Zafar and Khwaja Iqbal (New Khan) beat Tahir Javed and Habib Alam (Wapda) 21-19, 21-15.
